ELEMASTERS
COVER REVEAL COMING SOON
Every emo band had it right.
Dustin Ying couldn’t wait to graduate high school and get the hell out of his suffocating hometown. He was done with small-town politics, with the sideways looks from people who thought he was a freak; because of the (true) rumors that he was gay, or the weirder whispers that he was “part fish” thanks to his freakish talent on the swim team. No matter how many records he broke, it was never enough.
Not like his twin brother, Chris. Chris, who was praised for absolutely everything; star of the basketball team, heartthrob to all the pretty girls, their parents’ golden eldest son, despite being born just two minutes earlier. That was the status quo, and Dustin had long since stopped expecting it to change.
But none of the CDs in his collection had prepared him for what came next.
The rolling fog that swallowed him, Chris, and their three closest friends whole. The impossible palace, untouched by time. The elemental ring that fused itself to his finger, pulsing with power he barely understood…
… and the 2000 year old ghost boy who told them the truth: this had all happened before; and it would happen again.
Bound to the Five Elements, the newly awakened Elemasters are thrust into a war with the remnants of an immortal emperor who refuses to stay dead. Training becomes survival. Survival becomes confrontation. And every victory demands a price none of them are sure they’re ready to pay.
Because power doesn’t just reveal who you are.
It tests what you’re willing to carry, and what you’re finally forced to let go.
Every emo lyric was right— Life is a nightmare.
And it’s so not fair.
CHARACTERS
Dustin Ying
Dustin Ying has lived his entire life in the shadow cast by his twin brother’s fiery personality. He’s impressive in his own right; the former frontman of an emo band with a powerhouse voice, and currently the star member of the Pacific Coast High swim team. But none of that has ever been enough to make people really see him. At least, not in the way he desires. He keeps telling himself that if he just endures the pressure and erasure long enough, then he’ll shine on his own one day. But honestly, he has no idea how much longer he can keep up his usual coping routine
Chris Ying
Chris Ying wasn’t just born to be a star, he was born to be the brightest one in the fucking sky. He’s been many things in his 18 years of life; a dance prodigy, a basketball legend, and the more charismatic, “natural leader” of the Ying Twins. For as long as he can remember, he’s only ever had one speed- full throttle. He’s managed to channel that momentum into social capital, and a fierce desire to protect his twin brother and pull him into the limelight on his terms, but he’s never really had to reckon with the idea that his constant combustion may leave collateral damage in his wake
Bailey Yu
Bailey Yu has always been the kind of girl that demands attention, whether it be reverence or ridicule. Being the only trans girl in a town like Pacific Cove wouldn’t be easy for even the strongest souls out there… but Bailey’s always been stronger than the strongest. Since she was about 6 years old, she’s known exactly who she is, and she won’t waste time forcing anyone else to believe it. Instead she’ll stay perfectly rooted, like a candy coated mountain, locked into her truth with confidence and offbeat style
Chloe Li
If Chloe Li could be described by a single word, it would be… “structure”. Everything about her life is planned, polished, and perfected, but it’s not merely out of vanity. Her mother is a local legend; a Black woman from a rough neighborhood who managed to secure a legacy as a nationally famous fashion designer. Living up to an example like that isn’t just tough, it’s impossible unless you absolutely refuse to crack under the pressure. And Chloe’s never cracked a day in her life
James Zhang
James is the brand of carefree that can only come from generational wealth. He’s bounced between just about every extra-curricular Pacific Coast High has to offer, from dance, to choir, to gardening club, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Outside of school he’s a bit more elusive; his family living way up on Berry Mountain, away from the town proper in their luxurious estate. Some might expect James to be cold and distant, but he’s basically a living houseplant; thriving on affection and energy as he seeks out all the thrills and pleasures that life has to offer
Sima Yao
Sima Yao is mostly an enigma. What the group knows? He was once the recordkeeper for none other than Qin Shi Huang, first emperor of China himself, and now he’s a spirit residing in a creepy palace in some weird pocket dimension. What they don’t know? Why he’s pulled them there, bestowed them with five rings that can control the elements, and keeps speaking in riddles about what the hell is going on. As the mystery unfolds, they’ll find that he’s more intrinsically connected to all this than they could’ve ever predicted, and his stake in what’s coming is very personal
